Eden Dock footbridge being towed into position

Pineapple Public Space Award for Eden Dock

Eden Dock, the project that reimagines urban waterfronts, has won the Public Space Award at this year’s Pineapple Awards.

The Pineapple Awards celebrate great places that thrive and were set up by The Developer in partnership with the Design Council in 2019.

Winning the Public Space category, our transformative design at Canary Wharf’s Middle Dock sees floating islands of timber seating integrated with gardens, steps, and walkways, bringing the public realm down to the water level for the first time.

The scheme saw us collaborate with the client, Canary Wharf Group, HTA Design, and Greengage to transform the 1.55-hectare site. It is part of our wider vision to reimagine Canary Wharf, creating engaging public spaces and routes, and finding inventive ways to unlock the district's remarkable untapped potential, while enhancing greenery and biodiversity. A final piece of this strategy at Middle Dock, is the new north-south footbridge across the dock, which will follow proven desire lines to link local landmarks and improve access to the DLR, opening this summer.

The judges said: "On an estate seeking to reinvent itself as a dynamic destination, this ambitious project reconnects people with the river, inviting new uses including the potential to swim in the Thames. The floating reed beds and microhabitats will be impactful for humans and non-humans alike. The citizen science elements of the project were particularly exciting. It’s encouraging to think of how this might change perceptions of the wider area and invite a broader demographic to enjoy its public spaces."
