Aspex Gallery
Working with Aspex Visual Arts Trust, we relocated this independent, contemporary art gallery to the Vulcan Building, a large naval storehouse and Scheduled Ancient Monument, on Gun Wharf within the former HMS Vernon area of the historic Portsmouth Docks.
At the time, the relocation was seen by Portsmouth City Council as a vital ingredient in the regeneration of the docks, providing a focal point for the burgeoning community. Today, the gallery, focussed on new artists and education, is at the heart of the Gunwharf Quays shopping outlet and leisure complex.
The award-winning project complements the industrial found space with simple, contemporary interventions and strikes a balance between providing dedicated programme space and creating flexible main areas that maintain the original red brick volumes of the Regency storehouse.
