Shrewsbury Big Town Plan
Shrewsbury is one of the UK’s most significant heritage towns, with over 800 listed buildings. Building on the success of Shrewsbury’s Big Town Plan, we worked alongside Shropshire and Shrewsbury Councils and Shrewsbury BID as part of a multi-disciplinary team to set out a “Masterplan Vision” for how the town could evolve over the next two decades and addressing issues such as sustainability and climate change while preserving the historical character of Shrewsbury.
The consultation process was integral to this project. As such, we worked closely with the local community via collaborative workshops and engagement. Their insights helped us to formulate key moves for our vision based upon prioritising pedestrians and cyclists; being commercially viable and flexible to everchanging needs; strengthening the town’s unique sense of place and investing in the setting of its historic areas; and changing how people travel with attractive alternatives to driving being available for everyone.
As part of the vision, we applied the subsequent four key moves—Connecting communities; Celebrating heritage; Quality and characterful public spaces; and Creating opportunities and growth—across six study areas as a guide for future development. Of the six, Smithfield and Riverside will be the first of these areas to evolve into detailed proposals. The redevelopment of the council-owned land will create a vibrant new mixed-use riverside location, providing 270 new homes, workspace and leisure opportunities alongside new public spaces with fantastic views of the River Severn.
