Lakeside Activity Centre, Nene Park

Nene Park, situated west of Peterborough, receives almost two million visitors annually. As part of the Nene Park Masterplan 2017–2050, the Nene Park Trust is looking to grow the park with an ambitious landmark building in the form of the Lakeside Activity Centre.

Won through an invited design competition, the project will create a sustainable and memorable beacon for Nene Park. The bespoke building includes a 20-metre Olympic-standard climbing wall, a children’s indoor play area and a lakeside café.

The building celebrates the landscape and waterscape of the park by offering visitors views of the lake. The innovative form of the activity centre takes inspiration in its design from the geometry, materials, gear and equipment of climbing. Flexible, the centre provides a dedicated space for community development and activities.

“As a charitable Trust our aim is to support the health and wellbeing of the people of Peterborough through the provision of recreation and leisure activities. We do this against the backdrop of our beautiful Park, which we develop and maintain as a place to reconnect with nature, a haven for wildlife, a venue for focusing on culture and heritage and a rich source of educational opportunity.

“Lakeside Activity Centre will draw together many of these threads into a contemporary new nature-friendly offer at a time, post-COVID, when health and wellbeing, leisure, sport, and play will be so important, especially to families and young people.”
