Studio 144

Located on Guildhall Square, at the centre of Southampton’s thriving Cultural Quarter, the city’s new arts complex, Studio 144, serves as a new home for the John Hansard Gallery, community film organisation City Eye and Mayflower Theatre, the largest theatre company on England’s south coast.

The new complex, formed of two new buildings, is a contemporary and flexible arts space which pushes the boundaries of a typical arts centre by creating flexible and dynamic interiors. The south building houses both Visual Arts organisations and holds four primary exhibition spaces of over 600 square metres, plus education/workshop rooms and temperature-controlled storerooms.

The theatre, housed within the North building, contains a 450-seat flexible performance space with retractable seating, a dance/rehearsal studio, a box office, dressing rooms, plus ancillary and retail spaces. The continuous use of dark-fumed oak within the main auditorium adds a rich texture and acoustic baffling.
